Surviving Law @ QUT 2009

The first year experience of QUT law students

Introduction and my experience so far!

My name is Brent. I am 24 years old (25 this year!). I am a first year law student at QUT. I am undertaking the three year graduate entry LLB programme in the “off campus mode”.

I live in Melbourne, Victoria.

My prior studies include a master degree in commerce / business and a diploma in education / training from The University of Melbourne.

I am excited to be commencing the QUT law programme in 2009 and to be participating in this blog.

I work full-time in the education / training sector in a senior management role and therefore the biggest challenge for me in 2009 will be managing my work and study commitments.

To combat the challenge of managing my time / commitments I have enrolled in two subjects (i.e. in contrast to four) for this semester:  Legal Foundations A and Torts A.

My experience with QUT to date has been good. The only thing I have found a little frustrating is the continual e-mails (i.e. up to 4 or 5 in one day) and in many instances the e-mails do not relate to me at all (i.e. they are e-mails about elective units being offered / not being offered however the elective units are only available to later year students, etc).

Tomorrow and this coming weekend is the induction / orientation for “off campus” students. I will write another blog after the off campus induction / orientation weekend.

I have made my way through the majority of readings for the first 2 – 3 weeks for both of the subjects I am doing. The readings have been interesting and the material relatively easy to follow.

Speaking, as a “off campus” student I would prefer if there was a “study guide” for on campus and off campus students (i.e. 2 guides) as there is a lot of information in my study guide that does not relate to me.

I would be really interested in catching up with anyone that is from Victoria that is studying law at QUT. Please feel free to message me and we can exchange contact details.

I am also very interested in hearing about other student’s experiences with the course content – e.g. have you found any useful web sites or other resources?, etc.

Cheers, Brent.
